Concerns have emerged in recent days about the health of Pakistan’s former prime minister, Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned.
The Lahore-based Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital, named after Khan’s mother, issued the first statement.
“Reports suggest Imran Khan may be suffering from central retinal vein occlusion. Although we cannot independently verify this, we are deeply concerned and request that a team from Shaukat Khanum Hospital be granted immediate access to participate in his care,” the hospital statement said.
However, federal authorities prevented the Shaukat Khanum Hospital team from seeing Imran Khan in prison.
As concerning reports about Imran Khan’s health began to surface, senior leaders of his party revealed that the former prime minister was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad for treatment under cover of the night. They said that neither his family members nor any party officials were informed about the move. The absence of a timely response from any government official caused concern among Khan’s family and party workers across the country.
On Thursday, however, Pakistan’s information minister confirmed that Imran Khan was brought to Islamabad’s PIMS Hospital for eye treatment and returned to jail afterward, where his health was reported to be stable.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf immediately renewed its demand for unhindered access to his personal physician, while a Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court issued notices to the government seeking information about medical examinations of the former prime minister and his wife.
Following the statement by the federal information minister, PIMS Hospital also issued a press release, which said a “senior and trained ophthalmologist at Adiala Jail conducted a comprehensive eye examination of Imran Khan. Based on this examination, he was diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion in his right eye, and hospital treatment was recommended.”
The statement said Imran Khan was brought to PIMS Hospital for treatment during the night between Saturday and Sunday.

Imran Khan did not undergo surgery, only received injections:
Minister Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that former prime minister Imran Khan did not undergo any surgical procedure at PIMS and was only administered injections as part of his medical treatment.
Responding to questions regarding Imran Khan’s health during a Senate session on Tuesday, the minister said the PTI founder himself had expressed a wish to receive treatment at PIMS hospital.
He added that if any similar medical issue arises in the future, Imran Khan will be provided with all necessary medical facilities.
The minister said that if Imran Khan believes he has been denied any rights or has grievances, appropriate courts and appellate tribunals are available for legal recourse.
Clarifying reports about Imran Khan’s eye infection, the law minister said that blood circulation problems in the eyes are common after the age of 60. He said Imran Khan was given the same injections which are routinely administered to other patients and stressed that no operation had been performed.
Denying allegations of mistreatment, Azam Nazeer Tarar said no one is being treated unlawfully. He said Imran Khan is currently in jail following his conviction and is entitled to all facilities under the law. Tarar added that the prime minister never instructed authorities to withhold medical facilities from the PTI founder.
Instead, the prime minister directed the PIMS director to issue a fact-based press release to inform the public of the actual situation.
Tarar said that Imran Khan’s health is stable and expressed hope for his full recovery.

Bushra Bibi confirms Imran’s health improving after eye procedure
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) jailed founder Imran Khan’s health has improved following eye procedure, said party chairman Barrister Gohar Khan citing messages received from incarcerated former first lady Bushra Bibi.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, he said that the former prime minister was still undergoing treatment after an eye procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) last week. His comments come after members of Bushra’s family were allowed to meet her inside the prison. Barrister Gohar said that after three months, a meeting was allowed, though the PTI founder was not present during the interaction.
Citing the former first lady, the PTI chief said that doctors had warned of a risk of losing eyesight without a recommended procedure, adding that the visit to Pims had been advised by doctors. ..
