Surrey, BC – Penny Appeal Canada hosted their inaugural Breakin’ Dates Iftar Gala at the Empire Banquet Hall in Surrey last week, bringing together prominent members of the community for a worthy cause. The event aimed to raise funds for the Orphan
Kind program, an initiative that provides essential support, including nutrition, education, and emotional care, to orphaned children in Pakistan and Palestine.
The gala featured a distinguished guest speaker, Sheikh Abdul Nasir Janda from Texas, who delivered a powerful message about the importance of caring for orphans during Ramadan. His words resonated with the audience of 150 people who had gathered from all over the lower mainland to show their support.
The event also welcomed former Langley Imam, Fawad Kalsi, who now serves as the Chief Development Officer of Penny Appeal Canada. He was warmly received by the community and expressed his excitement about being back for this worthy cause.
Highlighting the urgent need to address the global orphan crisis, Fawad Kalsi stated, “There are over 100 million orphans around the world, with more children becoming orphaned every day. Our focus on our OrphanKind program, getting as many orphans sponsored as possible, and providing them with vital resources, so that they can live better lives is a mission our entire team has put their heart and soul into.”
The generosity of the community was evident as a member donated his motorcycle for auction, and various pieces of the Kabah Kiswa were made available for grabs, adding to the fundraising efforts of the evening.
Penny Appeal Canada, which has been operating in Canada since 2019, is rapidly emerging as the largest Muslim charity in the country. With a portfolio of well-run international development programs in over 30 countries and dynamic home projects that have positively impacted thousands of people across Canada, Surrey’s Muslim community can expect to see Penny Appeal Canada’s “team orange” continue to serve their community.
With the success of their first annual Breakin’ Dates Iftar Gala, Penny Appeal Canada is committed to continuing their efforts to make a meaningful impact in communities both locally and globally.
