Surrey Women’s Centre celebrated 25 years of Justice, Power and Freedom for women and girls on Saturday June 9th, at the Holland Park. Kamal Dhillon, local author of Black and Blue Sari and International speaker on violence against women and girls presented a heart warming message around women’s resilience in the face of violence. Former Minister of Women’s Equality Ms. Penny Priddy made special comments to honor the 25-year journey of the Center. Several community groups including Diverscity, Vancouver and Lower Mainland Multicultural Family Support Services and Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society also participated at the event by sharing resources and information. The Consulate General of Pakistan Mr. Tariq Mohammed also graced the event with his presence. The celebration included the honoring of founding mothers who worked tirelessly in setting strong foundation of the Centre.
About Surrey Women’s Centre: Last year alone over 5000 women accessed the support services of Surrey Women’s Centre. Surrey Women’s Center is the largest women’s centre in BC. It is a crisis centre for women and girls escaping domestic violence, sexual assault and other forms of gender-based violence. We offer empowerment and healing for women and girls whose lives have been impacted by the violence. Our counsellors offer one on one counselling support for women and girls. Individual sessions explore the dynamics of violence and the impact of trauma. Women may not always call the police and our Centre is often the first and sometimes the only place they call. By offering services like our crisis line, the Embrace Clinic, court accompaniment and providing support to mothers who are going through the child protection system we support women and children who otherwise may not get the supports they need.
Surrey Women’s Center is a registered Charity and we rely on your donations to keep our doors open for women and children who need our support. By becoming a monthly donor you can help keep women and girls safe.
