The month of October is Islamic Heritage Month, which was officially established by the Canadian government in 2007. Islamic Heritage Month is a great opportunity to learn about the rich history of Islam, the vast diversity within Islam, and to break down stereotypes and beliefs that interrupt our goals of inclusion.
Islamophobia in Canada
Islamophobia is defined as the fear, hatred and prejudice toward Muslims and Islam more generally. Islamophobia leads to violence and a general lack of safety for people who are or who are perceived to be Muslim. Islamophobia and racism often intersect and can be experienced differently by people who have been targeted. Attacks on Islamic places of worship often occur when there is a rise of anti-Islamic sentiment in society.
June 6, 2021: In London Ontario, the Afzaal family is the target of an attack that killed 4 out of 5 family members
October 12, 2020: Toronto Police investigate threats being made at a local mosque
November 14, 2015: A mosque in Peterborough is set on fire
It is important to continuously question stereotypes that depict Islam in a negative light. These ideologies are often used to justify the maltreatment or exclusion of Muslims. As an organization, one step we can take is to educate ourselves on Islam and the vast diverse people who are Muslim. You can start by checking out the resources below.

Statement on Canadian Islamic History Month

OTTAWA, October 1, 2021
Today marks the beginning of Canadian Islamic History Month. Proclaimed by Parliament in 2007, this month recognizes the significant role that Muslim communities play in Canadian society and highlights their extraordinary contributions.
Canadians have an opportunity this month to learn more about the history of Islam in Canada and recognize the many achievements of Muslim Canadians in the arts, sports, academics, sciences, literature, and their communities. It is also a time to acknowledge the ongoing challenges and barriers that Muslim Canadians face. This year has been difficult for Muslim communities across Canada, as we saw the horrific results of racism and hate.
Together, we must combat all forms of discrimination, Islamophobia and hate-fueled violence directed at Muslim communities across the country. This month is a time to continue working toward a compassionate, inclusive and safer Canada for everyone.
Happy Canadian Islamic History Month!
