Canadians can expect “more substance” and less “showboating” from the federal government after the Liberals secured a majority in Monday’s byelection, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday.
The Liberals won the byelections in the Ontario ridings of University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest, as well as the closely contested Quebec riding of Terrebonne on Monday. This brings the number of MPs in the Liberal caucus to 174, which should allow the Carney Liberals to pass legislation without support from opposition parties.
“There is a difference between real testimony, real substance, getting to issues, debating aspects of law… and showboating. We’re going to have less of that. We’re going to have more substance,” Carney told reporters Tuesday.
“Canadians want government to govern, to take action on immediate concerns,” he said, adding that the federal government would move to address issues such as affordability. When asked if
opposition MPs crossing the floor over to the Liberals would erode voters’ trust in democracy, Carney said those MPs come from varied political orientations and different parts of the country and their floor crossings were “consistent with the government program.” “We’re fortunate to have them and we’re moving forward together with them,” Carney said.
Danielle Martin kept the Toronto-area riding of University–Rosedale in Liberal hands, which was vacated after former cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland resigned in January to accept an appointment as special economic advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Liberal candidate Dolly Begum won Scarborough Southwest, which former cabinet minister Bill Blair held until he was announced as Canada’s next high commissioner to the United Kingdom. Liberal Tatiana Auguste held onto the Quebec riding of Terrebonne with a wider lead over the Bloc Québécois than her one-vote general election win that was nullified earlier this year.
