Pakistan’s President Dr Arif Alvi summoned the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja for a meeting to ‘fix dates’ for upcoming elections.
As the cracks between the ruling regime and Pakistan’s President Dr. Arif Alvi intensified, the latter summoned the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja for a meeting. Alvi scheduled the meeting for tomorrow to “fix an appropriate date” for the country’s upcoming general elections. The election that was supposed to take place within 90 days was postponed after former PM Shehbaz Sharif announced that the polls would be held based on the 2023 digital census. Following this, the ECP stated that elections can not be held this year since the body will take time to delimitate the constituencies based on the current population.
On Wednesday, Alvi wrote a letter to CEC stating that it is the “constitutional requirement” for the president to decide the date for general elections. The letter was eventually posted by the office of the Pakistani President on X, formerly known as Twitter. “By virtue of Article 48 (5) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President is obligated to appoint a date not later than 90 days from the date of dissolution for the holding of General Election of Assembly,”
