Ottawa, ON — Today, Liberal Members of Parliament chose to follow the Prime Minister’s weak leadership and vote against the following Conservative Opposition Day motion: That the House stand in solidarity with every elected band council on the Coastal GasLink route, the majority of hereditary chiefs, and the vast majority of the Wet’suwet’en people, who support the Coastal GasLink project, and condemn the radical activists who are exploiting divisions within the Wet’suwet’en community, holding the Canadian economy hostage, and threatening jobs and opportunities in Indigenous communities.
Todd Doherty, Conservative Shadow Minister for Transport, released the following statement: “Today’s vote is just another example of Justin Trudeau’s hypocrisy and weak leadership when it comes to this national crisis. “Almost three weeks have passed, 1,500 Canadians have lost their jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in damage has been done to Canada’s economy. Yet, the Trudeau Liberals still refuse to condemn these illegal blockades and the radical activists that are preventing hardworking Canadians from getting to and from their jobs.
“Justin Trudeau’s weakness over the last few weeks has sent a clear signal to businesses across Canada that the rule of law will not be upheld, that court injunctions will not be enforced and that major projects cannot get built. Make no mistake, these blockades are a dress rehearsal for protests against other projects across Canada. It’s time for the Prime Minister to stop dithering and to take strong action before these protests shut down our economy completely.
“Canada’s Conservatives will continue to stand in solidarity with every elected band council on the Coastal GasLink route, the vast majority of the Wet’suwet’en people, and those in Canada who are out of work due to Justin Trudeau’s weak leadership.”
