The Origin of Father’s Day
Many people assume Father’s Day (and Mother’s Day for that matter) is a holiday designed by greeting card makers to turn a profit. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The story behind how this day became a holiday is actually a tale of determination by one woman and a decades-long fight to get fathers the recognition they deserve. Some attribute the first Father’s Day observance to the 1907 Monongah, West Virginia mining disaster that killed 361 men—250 of them fathers— and which left more than a thousand children without a dad. Grace Golden Clayton, whose father was killed in the tragedy, suggested a service of commemoration to the pastor of her local Methodist chapel. But it never really caught on as an annual observance….
Even the newly formed “Father’s Day Council,” made up (and funded by) of members of men’s clothing retailers, couldn’t get the holiday recognized by 1938, only succeeding in getting calendar makers to mark the third Sunday in June with tie and pipe illustrations. And the general public had no interest in buying cards or gifts for dad that he probably didn’t need.

Celebrating Father’s Day in Islam: Permissible?
Question:
As-salamu `alaykum. I would like to ask an important question; is it permissible for Muslims to celebrate Father’s Day? How does Islam view it? Is it bid`ah?
Answer
Dr. Wael Shehab
A Muslim should show kindness, love, and dutifulness to his parents. Father’s Day is a social and family event that aims at celebrating fatherhood and honoring fathers.
There is nothing wrong with such social and cultural events in Islam as long as they don’t promote un-Islamic values.
Answering your question, Dr. Wael Shehab, PhD in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University and currently the Imam of the Downtown Toronto Masjid in Canada, states:
Dutifulness to parents, both mothers and fathers, is an Islamic value and obedience to Allah. One, therefore, should show kindness towards his parents because Allah Almighty says, {Your Lord has decreed, that you worship none save Him, and (that you show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, say not ‘Fie’ unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word.} (Al-Israa’ 17:23)
Ibn Abbas reported that a man asked the Prophet (PBUH) about the best deeds: “The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Having faith in Allah and His Messenger, then honoring one’s parents.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) In fact, the core meaning of the prohibited bidah in Islam is to introduce or invent a devotional or ritual act of worship into religion with no backing from the Shari`ah. It is not acceptable, therefore, for anybody to invent a new form of prayer or fasting. Acts of worship and religious rituals) should have correct Shari`ah proofs. Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, though some countries also celebrate it widely on other days by many other countries. Father’s Day is to complement Mother’s Day, a celebration that honors mothers and motherhood…
