An alleged Canadian member of terror cult ISIS has been captured, according to news reports. Global News is reporting that Mohamed Abdullah Mohamed claimed he was an Ethiopian-Canadian in a short video.
Kurdish forces said that Mohamed was captured in northern Syria by the Syrian Democratic Forces in Deir al-Zour.
In the video, Mohamed confesses that he entered Syria through the Turkey-Idlib border.
As the caliphate crumbles, Deir al-Zour has become the Islamic State’s last redoubt in the war-torn country.
According to Global News, the capture of Mohamed brings the number of Canadians in the custody of the Kurd fighters to four men, three women and seven children.
But a group representing families of the Canadian captives claims there are nearly two dozen being held prisoner. “The families of 21 Canadian detainees have asked FAVE to help get them out of the northern Syrian camps. The majority of these Canadians are infants and children who are suffering from hunger and illness in frozen tents,” said Prof. Alexandra Bain, director of Families Against Violent Extremism (FAVE). According to Global News, about 60 former ISIS-affiliated jihadis have returned home. Just four have been charged, with two convictions and two still awaiting trial.
Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale has said the government was under no legal obligation to bring Canadians captured in Syria home.
But a 2017 briefing note said the jihadis had a right to return to Canada — even if they were engaged in terrorist activities.
