One year has gone, another is about to begin, yet time flows on, indifferent to our awareness. Life carries us along—sometimes in joy, sometimes under the weight of grief. Nations, too, experience the same: every year brings wars, political and military conflicts, and natural disasters—earthquakes, floods, and landslides—that leave lasting marks on history.
As a community, we mourn the loss of remarkable individuals this year, notably Shams Jilani and Iqbal Cheema. Their contributions to the community were extraordinary, and we pray that Allah grants them the highest place in His mercy. Ameen.
Year-end reflection is crucial for individuals and nations alike. Evaluating what we gained, what we lost, our deeds and mistakes, helps guide us toward improvement. For those in power, accountability is especially vital. Leadership and holding power is more than authority—it is responsibility for an entire nation. The question remains: what did Pakistan’s rulers give to their people, and what did they take away this year?
2025 was a year of events, yet lacking in peace. Targeted killings, organized extortion, and attacks on civilians created widespread insecurity. Law enforcement struggled to maintain order, leaving ordinary citizens constantly uncertain about their safety. Governance appeared increasingly driven by individual interests rather than principles, law, or the welfare of the people.
Globally, Gaza became a symbol of suffering. Tens of thousands were killed, millions displaced, and humanitarian conditions deteriorated, while international resolutions produced little practical effect. At the same time, Pakistan faced questions about military and diplomatic decisions, human rights violations in Kashmir, and the suppression of political dissent. These raise urgent concerns about justice, accountability, and the value of human life.
The global economy also felt turbulence. Tariffs, inflation, and forced migration affected millions, including thousands of expatriates in Canada and the Arab world. Trillion-dollar trade and defense deals by Gulf leaders often prioritized political survival over humanitarian needs, highlighting the moral gap in global governance.
In short, 2025 was a year of challenges and crises, with peace and security in short supply. As we step into the new year, hope remains the guiding light. We pray for self-reflection, protection of life and faith, and better opportunities in the year ahead. We also pray that leaders prioritize the welfare of their people over personal gain, for as long as governance revolves around self-interest, the question remains: how long will this continur?
