Prime Minister Mark Carney says Greenland’s security is included in NATO, and the future of Greenland is a decision for the Danish territory and Denmark to make as U.S. President Donald Trump repeats threats of annexation.
Carney made the comments Tuesday morning in Paris ahead of a meeting with European leaders and allies of Ukraine to discuss Canada’s role in a potential ceasefire with Russia.
“We’re partners in NATO. It is a mutual defence alliance. We can provide that security. As NATO, we can provide security for all of NATO, Greenland included,” Carney said to reporters at the Canadian embassy in Paris.
“The future of Greenland is a decision for Greenland and Denmark exclusively — it’s their decision.”
Later on Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said on X she will be in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, “in the coming weeks” to open Canada’s new consulate there “and mark a concrete step in strengthening our engagement in support of Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including Greenland.” Speaking alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen ahead of a separate, bilateral meeting in Paris on Tuesday, Carney said Gov. Gen. Mary Simon will also be visiting Greenland next month.
“You are about to host our minister of foreign affairs, actually, in Greenland … and our governor general, who represents Canada, will be visiting Nuuk in the start of February,” he said.
Global News has asked Rideau Hall for more information about Simon’s travel plans.
Trump again said the United States “need(s)” to acquire Greenland on Sunday, saying it was in the interest of “national security.” The comments came one day after the U.S. conducted a military operation in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of the country’s President Nicolás Maduro.
In response, Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said, “enough is enough. No more pressure. No more hints. No more fantasies about annexation.”
Nielsen added that although Greenland is “open to conversations” about Arctic security, those talks must be done through proper channels and with respect to international law…                 Source: globalnews.ca/news/
