Surrey, B.C. – At tonight’s Regular Council meeting, the framework to maintain the RCMP as the Police of Jurisdiction in Surrey has been endorsed by City Council. A Joint Project Team will oversee the development of the final plan for Council endorsement on Dec. 12, prior to being forwarded to the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General for approval. The Project Team consists of senior leadership from the City and RCMP and consultants Dr. Peter German and Tonia Enger. “The step taken by Council tonight brings us closer to resolving the issue of policing in Surrey,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “The experience and expertise of Dr. Peter German and Tonia Enger are valuable additions to the Project Team. As well, this latest report makes clear how the number of police officers in Surrey will be maintained at its current level of 734 RCMP members. The process to bring in Surrey Police officers will be expedited through the RCMP’s Experienced Officer Program, which makes provision for experienced officers to bypass cadet hiring and join the RCMP directly.”
The City and RCMP are committed to a comprehensive approach and look forward to working in full collaboration with the Surrey Police Board and Surrey Police Service to ensure a quick resolution to maintaining the RCMP as Police of Jurisdiction in Surrey. Sent By: Amy Jugpal
