
The Dawoodi Bohra Community of Vancouver hosted a virtual conference on Saturday 12 February to mark the United Nations’ International Day of Women and Girls in Science and to raise awareness among young women and girls about the incredible career opportunities in STEM subjects.
Zainab Mantri B. Eng, an Implementation Specialist, is passionate about the environment and helps organizations manage their data so they can transition from paper to paperless. She spoke of being the behind-the-scenes engineer who makes an impact in her daily activities. Dr. Larissa Vingilis-Jaremko is the President of the Canadian Association for Girls in Science, an organization for girls interested in Science, Trades, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). She demonstrated how Science can be fun and led an ice cream making class for the girls.
Uzma Ali B.Eng. MSc, a Business Intelligence Architect Lead and passionate data scientist, spoke about different computer languages and how big data can be used to track global warming. Dr. Vingilis-Jaremko of CAGIS offered a free CAGIS Virtual session to each participant of the event. She commented, “It is wonderful that the Dawoodi Bohras of Vancouver are celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science by providing inspiring role models in STEM fields.”
On being asked by our Miracle Media reporter, about the steps taken to overcome the barriers and stereotypes in a predominantly male field, Uzma spoke about standing your ground and being confident in your skills. Zainab talked about focusing on bettering your performance and the results will provide the courage to face any such challenges. Larissa added that it helps to have awareness of existing stereotypes and spreading the message to educate people on it.
