August 5th marked the solemn observance of Youm-e-Istehsal—the “Day of Exploitation”—at the Consulate General of Pakistan in Vancouver, British Columbia. The event was held to condemn India’s unilateral revocation of Article 370 of its Constitution in August 2019, an action widely seen as an illegal annexation of the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The day also served to reaffirm solidarity with the Kashmiri people and their right to self-determination as guaranteed by numerous United Nations resolutions.
The gathering was attended by a cross-section of the Pakistani and Kashmiri diaspora, human rights advocates, and concerned members of the local community. Among the prominent personalities present were retired Lt. General Umer Durrani,     Dr. Zafar Adeel, and Dr. Ghulam Mustafa, all of whom addressed the gathering and spoke passionately about the historical and moral imperative to support the oppressed people of Kashmir. Their remarks highlighted the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region since the Indian government’s move in 2019, which stripped Kashmir of its special status under Article 370 and imposed an unprecedented military lockdown and communication blackout.
The event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran and the recitation of a Naat. Mr. Shahzad Hussain, the Consul General of Pakistan in Vancouver, read out the statements issued by the President, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister of Pakistan. These messages reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering diplomatic, moral, and political support for the Kashmiri cause and condemned the continuing human rights violations by Indian security forces in the region. Mr. Shahzad Hussain also delivered his speech at the end
Article 370 of the Indian Constitution had granted the region of Jammu and Kashmir a special autonomous status, recognizing its unique political and cultural identity. The article permitted the state to have its own constitution and autonomy over internal matters except for defense, foreign affairs, and communications. On August 5, 2019, the Government of India revoked this special status through a Presidential Order and passed legislation to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh—placing them under direct federal control.Since the abrogation, human rights organizations have reported widespread arbitrary detentions, suppression of free speech, restricted access to the internet, and curfews that have severely affected the daily lives of millions of Kashmiris. These actions have been condemned globally as violations of international law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention and the UN Charter.
Youm-e-Istehsal serves not only as a day of protest but also of remembrance and renewed commitment. The participants at the Vancouver consulate expressed their determination to continue raising awareness in Canada and globally until justice is restored and the Kashmiri people are granted their right to self-determination through a free and impartial plebiscite. The event concluded with light refreshment and tea served to the guests.
