The 45th federal general election takes place on Monday, April 28, 2025.
According to the Canada Elections Act, this year’s federal election was to be held no later than Oct. 20 and many had been anticipating a fall election. However, following Justin Trudeau’s resignation, Mark Carney was named prime minister and it had been speculated he might trigger an early election while the Liberals are polling ahead of the Conservatives.
On Sunday, March 23, Carney asked Gov. Gen. Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament, triggering the early federal election.
The election will send Canadians to the polls to vote for a new member of Parliament in each of the country’s 343 ridings.
By law, the official campaign period is required to be at least 37 days but no longer than 51 days..
What important dates do I need to know?
Voter Registration: Deadline is April 22
In order to vote, you’ll need to be registered as a voter.

After April 22, you’ll have to register when you arrive to a voting station and it may take a bit longer if the station is busy.
Voter Registration Card: Will arrive by or around April 11
If you’re registered in advance, you’ll get a voter registration card in the mail by April 11. This will tell you where and when you can vote.
If you don’t receive a voter registration card by April 11, visit the online voter registration service here to check your registration, register, or update your address.
Advance Voting: Scheduled for April 18 to 21
Advance voting takes place on certain days at your assigned polling station or you can vote early at any Elections Canada office across the country. This election’s advance voting days are April 18 through April 21 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
