On Saturday January 26th, Richmond’s Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre opened its doors for it’s Eighth Annual A Journey Into Islam exhibition and open house. The event once again attracted over 300 guests who were invited to gain a better understanding of the faith in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Visitors were encouraged and welcomed to ask any questions they had, and to establish fruitful dialogue with members and scholars of the local Muslim community. The event was attended by a diverse group of people from various professional and backgrounds including public officials, academics and members of various faith groups. Hon. Joe Peschisolido, the member parliament was also present.

This origin of the event was inspired by the youth of the community who were being asked a lot of questions by their friends and colleagues as there were misconceptions about their faith. Over eight years later, it continues to be organized and led by the youth with the support of other members of the community. The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for guests to become familiar with the core beliefs and practices of the Islamic faith in an engaging and comprehensible manner.
The evening began with an opportunity to observe the evening prayers in the Masjid. The formal program started with recitation of Quran and welcoming address delivered by Sheikh Murtaza Bachoo, Religious and Spiritual consultant at Az Zahraa Islamic Centre. This year’s theme was ‘Women in Islam’ Women have historically played a critical role in the development and expansion of the religion and this year’s keynote speaker Sr Fatemah Meghji helped to dispel the many myths that exist and to showcase Islam’s unique and holistic perspective on women as human beings.
Following a gourmet dinner, guests were invited to participate in a guided tour of the Masjid along with visiting the various exhibits which included Jihad, the Qur’an, Hijab, Islamic Dietary restrictions, the Pilgrimage to Mecca, an Islamic Art Museum, and important people in the fait.
This event is a great example to integrate with different religious groups and to present a real and softer image of Islam.
