The Annual Ashura Ijtema, organized by Dawat-e-Islami, took place at Faizan-e-Madina in Surrey and witnessed a remarkable turnout of both brothers and sisters. The evening commenced with a heartfelt recitation of the Holy Qur’an by Imam Mohsin, the Imam of Faizan-e-Madina. This was followed by spiritually uplifting nasheeds (poetic praises) in honor of the Final Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), as well as manqabat (devotional poetry) in praise of the noble family of the Prophet, the Ahl al-Bayt (may Allah be pleased with them).
The keynote speaker, Maulana Abid Attari, delivered an inspiring address focused on the life and noble character of Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him), the beloved grandson of the Final Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The speaker emphasized that while much attention is given to the tragic events of Karbala during Ashura, it is equally important to reflect on the life, character, and virtues of Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him).
Among the virtues highlighted was Imam Hussain’s deep devotion to worship. His son, Imam Zain-ul-Abidin (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated that his father would offer 1,000 units of voluntary prayer (nafl salah) each night. Additionally, Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have performed 25 pilgrimages (Hajj) on foot—demonstrating his immense dedication and humility.
The speaker also shed light on Imam Hussain’s compassion for the poor and needy. He was known to go out of his way to assist those in difficulty, embodying the Qur’anic injunction to care for the less fortunate. Attendees were reminded of the importance of following this example and supporting those in need within their own communities.
Furthermore, Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) was known for his exceptional forbearance and forgiveness. Even when faced with hostility and offense, he responded with silence and pardon—an embodiment of prophetic character.
Maulana Abid Attari concluded by stressing the importance of loving the Ahl al-Bayt (may Allah be pleased with them), as emphasized in numerous Hadith. He urged the audience to follow in the footsteps of Imam Hussain by embodying his qualities of devotion, compassion, and forgiveness, noting that genuine love leads to emulation.
The evening concluded with spiritual zikr (remembrance of Allah), a heartfelt du’a (supplication), and salutations upon the Final Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Ahl al-Bayt (may Allah be pleased with them).
Prior to Maghrib prayer, iftar was served, and following the prayer, dinner was provided for all attendees, fostering a spirit of community and togetherness.
