An incident in Surrey Saturday morning where someone opened fire on a home in has been classified as extortion-related,
according to police.
Officers were called to a home on the 1700 block of 32nd Avenue around 8:40 a.m. for reports of shots fired. The gunfire shattered a window, which left one person who was doing work on the outside of the home at the time with non-life-threatening injuries.
On Monday, a spokesperson for the Surrey Police Service said the shooting has been linked to the rash of extortions targeting members of the South Asian community throughout the Lower Mainland. “The worker who was hurt is in stable condition in hospital,” the statement from the SPS said.
A provincial task force dedicated to investigating these incidents has been notified, according to the SPS.
Justice Minister Nina Krieger spoke over the weekend at a packed memorial for slain businessman Darshan Sahsi, and outlined efforts to combat extortion-related
violence—including the deportation of three people and seven arrests. “I can assure you that we are ensuring that the police have all the tools necessary to investigate these crimes and to bring perpetrators to account,” she said.
Sahsi’s sons have said their father did not receive any extortion threats before he was gunned down outside his home last month. The motive for the fatal shooting has not been determined by homicide investigators, who have described the killing as “targeted.”
