The season of Fall is one to be cozy, indulge in our favorites, and change. Many of us associate fall or autumn as a happy season where memories from our past come up of sharing meals with our loved ones or indulging in lazy evenings watching our favorite movies.
Fall is a season of transition where we go from a vibrant, buzzing, and active season of summer to a more quiet, dark, and introspective time. It turns into an inward journey where we spend more time with ourselves and reflect on our year with the goals we achieved and the ones we did not. It is a
hopeful season where we have time to catch up on things or face an increased drive to meet our personal and professional goals. We look forward to meals together or prepare for vacations and a perfect blend to slow down and reflect on ourselves.
What better way to do that than lean on our five senses to slow down?
What you feel? – The first approach is to focus on our feelings inside – are you feeling hopeful and excited for the remaining of the year? Do you feel upset that you did not meet certain goals? Are you feeling frustrated by certain aspects of your life? Many of us might feel an increase in our emotions and
they might come across more complex than you expect. While the falling leaves may evoke sadness, they also represent a rebirth. It is the start of a new school year, shedding of old cycles, and a new beginning for many of us as we start the last phase of the year. Focus on your feelings and try to get to the root so you can take a more positive approach to either fix the situation or practice gratitude.
What do you see? The falling leaves can feel sadness for many of us, the death of something so beautiful we have been seeing the last months. The joy of shade on a hot summer day is giving way to empty branches and rotting leaves. It could also be shedding old skin and making way for new beginnings. It is a time of celebration for many of us through the beginning of holidays. Even if we don’t celebrate certain days, we can still use that time to spend moments with loved ones trying season goodies such as pumpkin pies. Use the time to come together and eat the fruits of your labour and focusing on gratitude for the company we have.
What do you smell? What do you taste?
The change comes with the smell of first rain after a hot summer season. This smell that goes beyond translation where people of all cultures and races admire.
It is a reminder of our place in the world where we must all return to the earth and use this time to leave an impact while we are here. The wonderful smell of pumpkin, apples, and everything related to fall is a way to focus on the good that might come with an otherwise cold and dark time, a reminder that there is light and good no matter how it may feel. It is a chance for us to create happy memories no matter what our surroundings may seem.
What do you hear? Fall is quiet, with no familiar sounds.
Seasons are like merry-go-round turns where we can hop on every stop and make the most out of it. The quiet is the perfect time to take in our surroundings.
We can use this time to go inwards and focus on gratitude as the weather changes to a
chilly, dark, and more meaningful time.
