A 34-year-old man has been charged in connection with Monday’s shooting near the Gateway SkyTrain station and outside a Surrey Police office. Jose Digno Rodriguez Centeno is charged with one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm, pointing a firearm at someone “without a lawful excuse,” reckless discharge of a firearm, assault of a police officer and resisting or wilfully obstructing a police officer.
At about 3:13 p.m., Surrey Police Service officers who were nearby reported that a man was shooting near the station at University Drive and 108 Avenue. No members of the public or police officers were injured, but the man fled. Police found him in front of the nearby District 1 Community Police Office, where he reportedly fired more shots.
With the help of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team and the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service, the man was taken into custody.
Police temporarily closed the police office as the RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit searched a bag the suspect had left. It contained nothing suspicious, police said.
The Surrey Police District 1 Community Police Office was open to the public Tuesday (Oct. 7) after Monday’s shooting outside the office. The glass on the front door of the building could be seen taped up with duct tape on Tuesday (Oct. 7). Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton told Black Press Media that, besides the front door entrance, there was no further damage to the building, and SPS confirmed the shooting occurred outside.
Anyone with information about this incident, or anyone who may have been in the area of Gateway Skytrain Station, 108 Avenue, King George Boulevard, and 107A Avenue between 2:30 and 4 p.m. and witnessed the shots fired or actions of the suspect, or has CCTV or dashcam footage, is asked to contact the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 25-87819 (SP) or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477
