MLA Jas Johal of Richmond-Queensborough decided to use offensive tone and language when referring to Pakistani nationals on May 15th, 2019 during the Oral Question Period at the Parliament in Victoria, BC. In making his statement to MLA Jinny Sims, Johal reminded his fellow MLA that she “is MLA for Panorama North” not
“Islamabad North “ to which MLA Jinny Sims replied that she represents all
Canadians in the constituency regardless of their ethnicity, faith, political affiliation and religion.
As a member of the MLA, we remind MLA Johal and other MLA’s to be considerate of their fellow Canadians and focus on resolving solutions through a constructive and positive dialogue. In attempting to make his point, Jas Johal was highly insensitive to using language which may be offensive to many Canadians of Pakistani Origins.
It should be noted that Pakistani Canadians are one of the fastest growing communities in the Lower Mainland and contribute largely to the positive growth of BC along with Canada.
In light of his comments, we request MLA Jas Johal to apologize to his fellow Canadians for his distasteful remarks and expect of him to avoid divisive and offensive language in the future which can result in division of Canadians.
