Sudan conflict escalates, forcing mass displacement in Kordofan

The UN reports over 600 civilians fled two South Kordofan villages amid intense violence, with local groups accusing the RSF of attacks and forced conscription. Separately, the displacement from El-Fasher has surpassed 106,000 since the paramilitary group’s takeover, exacerbating Sudan’s severe humanitarian crisis. The United Nations migration agency confirmed on Monday that escalating violence in Sudan’s South Kordofan state forced more than 600 residents to abandon their homes in the villages of Tebsa and Afnori. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that its field teams estimated the displacement of 645 individuals on November 22 due to a rapid security breakdown, with families now scattered across the Abbasiya Tagali locality amid a “highly tense and volatile” situation.
Allegations of Atrocities
Local civil society groups, including the Nuba Mountains Platform and the Tebsa Youth Gathering, have levied serious accusations against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allies. The groups claim RSF fighters besieged Tebsa for hours, stormed the local market, looted property, and killed one resident while injuring another. They further alleged that approximately 700 young men were detained and transported to a camp for forced military conscription. Neither the RSF nor the allied SPLM-N faction has responded to these claims.
Wider Regional Crisis
This incident is part of a broader wave of violence engulfing the Kordofan region, where heavy clashes across North, West, and South Kordofan have displaced tens of thousands in recent days. In a separate development, the IOM disclosed that the displacement from North Darfur’s capital, El-Fasher, has reached a critical point. Since the RSF captured the city on October 26, over 106,000 people have fled to 37 different localities across 11 states, with severe insecurity along routes continuing to hinder safe movement for civilians.
The National Conflict Context
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has plunged the nation into a deep humanitarian catastrophe. The RSF now controls all five states of the Darfur region, while the army holds most of the remaining territory, including the capital, Khartoum. According to the World Health Organization, the war has resulted in at least 40,000 deaths and has displaced a staggering 12 million people, creating one of the world’s most severe displacement crises..
