Mounties on Vancouver Island are searching for a pair of suspects who allegedly used counterfeit money at a gas station over the weekend. The Sooke RCMP says the men used a fake $100 bill at the Chevron station at 6610 Sooke Rd. on Dec. 20.
The incident was reported to police on Monday, prompting the RCMP to publish photos of the suspects the following day.
The first suspect is described as a white man between 20 and 30 years old with brown hair and a beard. He was wearing a black North Face jacket at the time of the transaction, according to police.
The second suspect is described as a white man, between 20 and 30 years old, wearing a blue-green shirt. “We are asking businesses owners as well as individuals selling private goods to use vigilance when conducting monetary transactions,” Cpl. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the B.C. RCMP, said in a statement Tuesday. “We encourage you to familiarize yourself with security features of bank notes or to simply refuse it if it appears suspicious.”
The warning comes just one day after police in the neighbouring community of Saanich reported a rise in complaints of counterfeit $100 bills circulating in the area.
The Saanich Police Department said the fake currency is showing up in stores and in private transactions arranged through online marketplaces.
“If you are accepting cash during a transaction, please make sure to inspect it carefully,” the department said in a news release. “If you receive a counterfeit bill, please set it aside and contact police.”..
