An Open Letter
The Right Hon. Prime Minister Mark
Carney and Hon. Members of Parliament
Dear Prime Minister Carney and Honourable Members,
On behalf of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society and the broader Sikh community in Surrey, British Columbia, we express our profound concern and deep disappointment regarding Canada’s invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming G7 Summit.
Our concern is heightened by the ongoing investigation into the assassination of Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar—a Canadian citizen, revered Sikh leader, and elected President of our Gurdwara—who was tragically murdered on June 18, 2023, at our Gurdwara premises. Bhai Nijjar was a peaceful advocate for human rights and Sikh sovereignty.
In September 2023, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau disclosed credible intelligence to Parliament linking Indian government agents to Bhai Nijjar’s murder.
This grave allegation was further validated in October 2024 when Canadian law enforcement publicly confirmed clandestine operations by Indian agents on Canadian soil, resulting in the expulsion of six Indian diplomats. Despite these alarming developments, the Indian government has neither cooperated nor acknowledged responsibility.
This invitation is particularly distressing given its timing—announced on June 6, 2025—the anniversary of the devastating 1984 Indian Army assault on Sri Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple), a deeply painful day for Sikhs globally. Such timing compounds the emotional trauma and unresolved grievances of our community.
The Sikh community perceives this diplomatic action as undermining Canada’s commitment to justice, citizen safety, and national sovereignty, potentially signaling tolerance for state-sponsored violence and foreign interference.
We strongly urge the Government of Canada to reconsider and rescind this invitation until a transparent, thorough investigation into Bhai Nijjar’s assassination concludes with justice and accountability.
We also insist that the Canadian government defer further diplomatic engagements until all legal proceedings related to this matter have been finalized.
Canada must uphold its principles, prioritizing justice, national sovereignty, and the safety and dignity of all citizens.
Respectfully,
Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society
Surrey, British Columbia
