“We are all on a path to reconciliation together. “We must recognize the failures of the past – the terrible and tragic legacy of Canada’s residential schools, the heartbreak of the Sixties Scoop, the erasure of cultures and languages have all contributed and compounded the challenges faced by too many today. “We must be able to confront the reality of history and to recognize these wrongs. They were wrong when they happened and they remain wrong today.
“We also must recognize empty rhetoric and words don’t change things for Indigenous People. Words must be met with leadership. Rhetoric must set the stage for action – because it is in action that there is hope.
“There is hope for a brighter future, more opportunity and a city and country which can walk shoulder to shoulder with Indigenous Peoples, on the path of reconciliation together.
“The City of Vancouver is proud of our partnerships with the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations on whose traditional land our communities sit. We are proud of the steps we have taken to empower and support all those Indigenous Peoples who call this city home.
“More work must be done, and we are committed to do it every day – not just on this day when we recognize the critical importance of Truth and Reconciliation.
“But let us realise the call to action this day represents. Let us answer that call, and together, we can build a brighter future.”
