Elon Musk is planning to overhaul messaging on X with a new feature called XChat, promising end to end encryption and an experience that rivals WhatsApp and Signal. As Musk pushes to turn X into an everything app, questions remain about how secure XChat will be, how it handles user data, and whether it can compete with established encrypted messaging platforms.

What is XChat?
XChat is a proposed messaging system being developed for X. Unlike the platform’s current direct messages, XChat is intended to function as a full-scale chat product similar to WhatsApp or Signal.
According to Musk, XChat is being built to support private messaging, group chats, voice and video calls, file sharing, and possibly payments. It is designed to be deeply integrated into the X ecosystem rather than operating as a separate app.
As of now, XChat has not been fully launched. Some features are reportedly in testing, but most users still see the standard direct messaging system.
WhatsApp: The world’s most popular encrypted messenger
WhatsApp is one of the most widely used messaging apps in the world, with more than two billion users. It is owned by Meta and is primarily used for private messaging, voice calls, video calls, and group chats.
WhatsApp uses end to end encryption by default for all messages and calls. This means Meta cannot read the content of conversations. However, WhatsApp does collect metadata, including who you communicate with, how often, and at what times. While message content remains private, usage patterns are still visible to the company.
For most users, WhatsApp offers a strong balance between convenience and security.
Signal: The gold standard for privacy
Signal is widely considered the most secure mainstream messaging app available today. It is run by a nonprofit foundation and is built entirely around privacy.
Signal uses end to end encryption by default and pioneered the Signal Protocol, which is now used by WhatsApp and other platforms. Signal stores almost no metadata and cannot see message content, contact lists, or meaningful usage data.
If maximum privacy is the priority, Signal remains the strongest option. The tradeoff is a smaller user base and fewer features compared to WhatsApp.
XChat encryption: promised but not yet proven
Elon Musk has stated that XChat will include end to end encryption, but details about how that encryption will work have not been fully disclosed.
Unlike Signal and WhatsApp, XChat has not yet published information about its encryption protocol, nor has it undergone independent security audits. It is also unclear how much metadata X would retain about user communications.
Until encryption details are made public and verified by security experts, XChat remains an unknown in terms of privacy protection.
What end to end encryption actually protects
End to end encryption ensures that only the sender and the recipient can read a message. The platform hosting the conversation cannot access the content, even if its servers are compromised or subpoenaed.
This protects messages from hackers, unauthorized access, and surveillance of message content.
What encryption does not fully protect
Encryption does not hide everything. Most messaging platforms can still see metadata, such as who is communicating with whom, when messages are sent, and how often conversations occur.
Signal minimizes this data as much as possible. WhatsApp retains more metadata. XChat has not yet clarified its approach.
Which messaging app should you trust?
Signal is the best choice for users who prioritize privacy above all else. WhatsApp offers strong encryption with broader adoption and convenience. XChat has potential, but it is still unproven.
If XChat launches with transparent encryption standards and independent audits, it could become a serious competitor. Until then, it remains a promising idea rather than a trusted platform.
