Detectives from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and the Independent Investigations Office were called to a home in Surrey, B.C., on Monday, where a woman was killed and a man was fatally shot by police. RCMP officers from the Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) were called to the home on 195 Street and 66A Avenue around 8:30 p.m. following reports of an assault in progress.
BC RCMP said officers entered the home and found a man with a weapon.
Following an “interaction,” police fired on the man who, despite receiving medical care, died at the scene. Police then found a woman already deceased in the home.
The homicide team confirmed that the deceased woman and man were a couple in their 60s who lived together at the home.
Initial evidence indicates police were responding to a physical assault in progress stemming from intimate-partner violence.
“This was not the outcome that anyone had hoped for,” Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT said in a statement. “We extend our thoughts to the family members of the deceased, first responders and witnesses who have been impacted by this incident.” Neighbours described the scene as “chaotic.” The homicide team confirmed that the deceased woman and man were a couple in their 60s who lived together at the home.
