In Islam, there is no such thing as Mother’s day or Father’s day. In fact, Islam urges us to respect and care for our parents throughout our lifetime, instead of specifying certain days for it. Allah has commanded us to be good to our parents. Allah says in the Quran, “Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him and be good to parents.” (Surah Nisa 4:36)
In the above verse Allah mentions Tauhid (Worshipping Him Alone) along with being dutiful to one’s parents. Thus, this should be our foremost concern (second only to obeying Allah and His Messenger)
Our parents, especially our mothers, undergo so much, just to keep us safe in this world. Therefore, we should strive to be good to our parents, most importantly our mothers.
Most of us are aware of the hadith in which Rasoolullah (saw)was asked as to who is most deserving of one’s good company and he replied, “Your Mother”, not once but thrice. But why did Allah’s messenger mention “your mother” three times and the father only once?
Why do mothers deserve most of the companionship and not the father?
Well, isn’t it quite obvious that it’s because it is the mother who bore you in her womb for nine long months? The one who spent sleepless nights just to feed and keep you warm. The one who makes so many sacrifices on your behalf.
So do you think just a bouquet of flowers or a gift on a particular day would suffice?
What are our duties towards our mothers as Muslims?
* Obey them as long as they don’t go against Allah and His Messenger.
* Treat them kindly at all times. Have mercy on them.
* Ask Allah to shower His mercy on them. Make Dua for them and ask Allah to forgive their sins.
* Be thankful to them. * Honour them.
* Make them feel happy by listening to their advice or by buying gifts for them once in a while. Make them feel special.
