I found myself in the midst of a sea of protestors, their chants echoing off the steel beams of Vancouver’s Burrard Bridge. “Rafah, Rafah, Rafah,” they cried out, their voices a unified call for peace in the wake of an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip town.
The March for Rafah
On February 12, 2024, thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators took to the streets of major Canadian cities. The largest gathering, held in Vancouver, saw over a thousand people come together in solidarity with the people of Rafah. They marched, they chanted, and they demanded an immediate ceasefire.“We cannot stand idly by while innocent lives are being lost,” said Sarah, a young woman clutching a homemade sign that read ‘HandsOffRafah.’ “We need to let our government know that we do not support the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza.”
A Global Cry for Peace
The Vancouver demonstration was not an isolated event. Similar protests have been held in cities around the world, from London to Sydney, as concern grows over the potential for a large-scale offensive attack by the Israeli military.
World leaders, including U.S. President Biden, have expressed their concerns about the situation in Rafah. The town, located along the Gaza-Egypt border, is the only checkpoint for humanitarian aid from Egypt. An attack on Rafah would cut off this vital lifeline, putting thousands of lives at risk.
The Road Ahead
As I stood on the Burrard Bridge, surrounded by the passionate cries of the protestors, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of hope. Here were people from all walks of life, united by a common goal: peace for Rafah.
The road ahead is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the people of Rafah will not be forgotten. The global community is watching, and we will continue to demand an end to the violence.
As the sun began to set over Vancouver, the protestors slowly dispersed, their chants fading into the evening air. But their message remains, echoing through the streets and across the world: ‘Rafah, Rafah, Rafah.’
